Abstract

This study examines the Markobar tradition as an integral part of the culture and a manifestation of the local wisdom of the Mandailing community, particularly in Tanjung Julu Village. The primary objective of this research is to explore the role of the Markobar tradition in representing culture and the inherited local values within the Mandailing society. Employing a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Markobar, literally meaning "to speak," constitutes an oral tradition embodying the local wisdom of the Mandailing people. The local values embedded within it are deemed essential to be unearthed, studied, and preserved due to their vital role in strengthening national identity amid globalization. The Markobar tradition is typically performed in various events, such as siriaon (celebrations or festivities) and mourning contexts like silulutun. In wedding ceremonies, the Markobar procession commences with an opening by the suhut (traditional leader), followed by contributions from the mora (wife’s family) and kahanggi (clan members), and concludes with counsel from both families of the bride and groom, adhering to the dalian natolu (kinship system). Conversely, in funeral ceremonies, while the procedural structure remains similar, the focus of Markobar shifts to conveying encouragement and expressions of condolence, initiated by the suhut and continued by the bereaved family. In addition, the Barzanji tradition represents a common religious practice among Muslims, involving the recitation and chanting of the Barzanji manuscript a literary work chronicling the life of Prophet Muhammad SAW, from his birth to his passing, along with his moral teachings and noble attributes. This tradition primarily aims to instill love and reverence for the Prophet Muhammad SAW, while also serving as a medium for reflection and drawing lessons from his exemplary conduct in daily life.
